Tony Abbott

Tony Abbott

Since 1994, Tony Abbott has published over sixty books of fiction for younger readers, including the popular Danger Guys series, Cracked Classics, and the very popular ongoing fantasy sequence, The Secrets of Droon. His realistic novel Firegirl appeared from Little, Brown in Spring 2006 and received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books.

Tony and his family reside in Connecticut.

         All of Baby, Nose to Toes

Victoria Adler

Speech pathologist Adler harnesses her knowledge of language to introduce baby's cutest body parts (all of them) through playful sounds, words, beats and rhyme. Light, lovely verse delivers gleeful repetitions of vowel and consonant sounds; words bubble and bounce, coming together in firm, satisfying stress patterns. Victoria's first book is All of Baby Nose to Toes.

        Jennifer Allison

Jennifer Allison

Jennifer Allison grew up in a small town in Michigan. One of her best friends lived on a sheep farm, and the two girls found the spooky atmosphere of the barn hayloft to be perfect for séances. As it turned out, the experience was also perfect inspiration for her Gilda Joyce novels.

Ms. Allison holds a B.A. from the University of Michigan and an M.F.A. from American University. Her various careers have included work as a news reporter and high school English teacher.

She currently resides in Washington, D.C., with her family.

          Lynne Barasch

Lynne Barasch

Lynne Barasch was born in New York City and grew up in Woodmere, New York. She studied at Rhode Island School of Design, and holds a BFA from Parsons School of Design. She is the author/illustrator of several picture books including Ask Albert Einstein, Hiromi's Hands, Knockin’ on Wood, A Country Schoolhouse, Radio Rescue, The Reluctant Flower Girl, Old Friends, A Winter Walk, and Rodney's Inside Story.

Radio Rescue was a 2001 ALA Notable Children's Book for Younger Readers.

She currently resides in New York City with her husband.

       Lauren Baratz Logsted

Lauren Baratz-Logstead

Lauren grew up in Monroe, CT, where her father owned a drugstore at which her mother was the pharmacist. She is a graduate of the University of Connecticut at Storrs, where she majored in psychology. She also has what she calls her “half-Masters” in English from Western Connecticut State University. Throughout college, she worked semester breaks as a doughnut salesperson, a job that she swears gave her white lung disease from all the powdered sugar she breathed.

Lauren began writing career in 1994 and has written books for children, teens and adults. She has a new series of children's books The Sister 8 that she has written with her husband Greg Logsted and daughter Jackie.

Lauren resides with her family in Danbury, CT.

         Sudipta Bardhan- Quallen

Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen                                             

Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen never thought she’d grow up to be a writer. In fact, in 2001, Sudipta was well on her way to not being a writer. She had graduated from the California Institute of Technology in 1998 with a BS in Biology, married and then returned to Caltech as a PhD candidate in developmental biology. Using her science background as a springboard, Sudipta began writing nonfiction books for children, Her first love, however, was always picture books, Sudipta worked on a number of manuscripts. She has written many books icluding the Mine-O-Saur.

Home is New Jersey, where she resides with her rowdy family and an imaginary pony named Penny.

Alex Beard

Manhattan native Alex Beard comes from a talented family of artists and is a painter, writer, and traveler and has emerged as one of his generation's most creative and successful artists. Alex's upcoming book The Jungle Grapevine will be available in the Fall of 2009.

Alex currently resides with his wife and son in Manhattan.

        Peter Brown

Peter Brown

Peter Brown says making picture books is the perfect job for him. He loves drawing and painting and writing. And for him the most satisfying part of making picture books is finding the perfect balance of storytelling with words and storytelling with art. When he has an idea he usually writes, writes, writes and gets most of it down in word form. Then he starts visualizing those ideas with sketches.  Peter is the author and illustrator of Chowder and The Fabulous Bouncing Chowder. His latest book is the Curious Garden.

Peter resides in Brooklyn, NY.

       Stephanie Calmenson

Stephanie Calmenson

 

Stephanie grew up in Brooklyn, New York, never imagining she would become a writer.  She began her professional life as an early childhood teacher, having the pleasure of reading to children and discovering which stories captivate them. She now speaks to children through her books, which include Dinner at the Panda Palace, a PBS Storytime selection; May I Pet Your Dog? A Horn Book Fanfare choice; Rosie, A Visiting Dog's Story, which Smithsonian Magazine called "one of the outstanding nonfiction books of the year; and Late For School, which Booklist calls a, "laugh-and-a-half....Fun for children and teachers alike."

Stephanie resides in New York.

Lynne Cherry

 

Lynne Cherry is the author and/or illustrator of over thirty award-winning books for children. Her best-selling books such as The Great Kapok Tree and A River Ran Wild teach children to respect the earth. Her books and the movie are inspired by her love of the natural world.
Lynne speaks widely-and passionately--about how children can make a difference in the world. Now Lynne is a movie producer making a movie Young Voices on Climate Change about some of these young people who have reduced their carbon footprint.

        Greg Christie

R. Greg Christie

R. Gregory Christie won three Coretta Scott King Honors (Illustration) for his books, The Palm of My Heart: Poetry by African American Children, Only Passing Through: The Story of Sojourner Truth, and also a New York Times Best Illustrated Book for Yesterday I Had the Blues. He has illustrated many books and his latest book is Open the Door to Liberty.

         Floyd Cooper

Floyd Cooper

Floyd is the 2009 Coretta Scott King Book Award winner for his work illustrating The Blacker the Berry, the Sweeter the Fruit. He has also received a Coretta Scott King Honor for his illustrations in Brown Honey In Broomwheat Tea and I Have Heard Of A Land. Born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mr. Cooper received a degree in fine arts from the University of Oklahoma.

In 1984 he came to New York City to pursue a career as an illustrator of books and now lives in Easton, PA, with his wife and two sons.

Jen Corace

Jen Corace is an artist and freelance illustrator who is originally from the suburbs of southern New Jersey. She eventually made her way to the Rhode Island School of Design and graduated with a BFA in illustration. While she hasn't lived in a suburb in over thirteen years she draws a lot of her imagery and inspiration from the eighteen years that were spent in New Jersey. She is the illustrator of Little Pea, Little Hoot, and her latest book Little Oink.

        Pat Cummings

Pat Cummings

Pat Cummings was born in Chicago. However, her family moved often because her father was in the army. They lived in Germany, Japan, and in several different states. Since she was very small, Pat Cummings has been drawing. It was in fifth grade that she first learned that art could be a good business. She sold her pictures of ballerinas for nickels, dimes, or sweets. Pat has authored and illustrated several books and illustrated many more. Harvey Moon, Museum Boy is her latest solo work.

Pat and her husband reside in Brooklyn, NY.

Because of her love for stories and children, Margery wanted to write children's books and edit them. She’s been lucky enough to do both. She worked for 21 years as Editor-in-Chief of Holiday House, Inc. as a children's book publisher in New York City. She is the author of many books including Skeleton Hiccups, Battlefield Ghost and We're Going on a Bear Hunt to name just a few. Her latest book is Princess Bess Gets Dressed.

Margery resides in Princeton, NJ, in the same house where she grew up, with her husband, two sons, and two cats, Boomerang and Nikki.

Denise Dowling Mortensen

Denise grew up in a big old house in Garden City, New York, a suburb of New York City. Our house was a happy, boisterous place—a neighborhood "magnet" of sorts—where all manner of stray animals, people and children gravitated. I never thought about being a writer until high school, when my tenth grade English teacher encouraged me to become one. After graduating from St. Bonaventure University, she worked in New York City at CBS News and The Conde Nast Publications. Denise has authored several books, her latest title is Wake Up Engines.

Denise resides in Chatham, NJ, with her husband and five children.

Stephanie Duckworth Elliott

Stephanie A. Duckworth-Elliott has over 15 years of experience as a Minority Educator both in
and out of the classroom. In addition, as a member of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, she has had the opportunity to play various roles within her Indian community, such as Assistant Education Director and conducts lectures on Native American
education.  Her first book is titled Poneasequa Goddess of the Waters.

Lisa Funari Willever

Teachers and parents always ask me where my energy comes from and I answer with a question. "How lucky am I to have realized my childhood dream and then be able to speak to children about it?" As an author, former teacher, and parent, I believe that it is as wonderful for authors and illustrators to interact with children as it is for children to interact with authors and illustrators! They become so familiar with our work and often know very little about us.

Lisa has written reference, chapter and picture books, her latest is There's a Kid Under My Bed.

     David Gavril

David Gavril

David Gavril was born in New York City and grew up in Chappaqua, New York. He began drawing at an early age, creating his first comic books while in elementary school. After college he moved to Cambridge, MA where he held a variety of jobs. Upon rediscovering the work of one of his childhood favorites, William Steig, he became interested in trying his hand at children’s books. Soon he began submitting his work to publishers. In 2001 he returned to New York City, where he sold his first book, Hector and the Noisy Neighbor.

His second book, Penelope Nuthatch and The Big Surprise, was published in 2006. His latest book, Chicken Soup, is a collaboration with renowned children’s author Jean Van Leeuwen, who also happens to be his mother.

He currently resides in Park Slope, Brooklyn with his fiancé.

Diane Goode

Diane Goode is the illustrator of dozens of beloved and critically acclaimed picture books including several written by Cynthia Rylant, Alligator Boy; When I Was Young in the Mountains, a Caldecott Honor Book; and most recently, Baby Face: A Book of Love for Baby. She is also the illustrator of President Pennybaker and My Mom is Trying to Ruin My Life both by Kate Feiffer and Louise the Big Cheese: Divine Diva and Louise the Big Cheese and the La Di Da Shoes both by Elise Primavera. She lives and works in Watchung, NJ with her husband, David, and their two dogs, Jack and Daisy.

  Lisa Greenwald

Lisa Greenwald

Lisa Greenwald grew up in Connecticut and Long Island, NY and now works in the library at the Birch Wathen Lenox School in Manhattan. She is also a recent graduate of the New School's MFA program in writing for children. Her first novel My Life in Pink and Green was released in March 2009 with great praise from Publisher's Weekly, Booklist and a starred review from Kirkus.

She resides in Brooklyn, NY. with her husband, whom she met at a sleepaway camp when she was 16.

      Dan Gutman

Dan Gutman

Dan was born in New York but grew up in New Jersey. He is a graduate of Rutgers, New Brunswick and has had a very interesting life so far. He has written essays, computer gaming magazine articles, and non- fiction for adults until he discovered his passion in life: writing children's fiction books.

Dan's knowledge of sports shines in books such as Babe and Me and the latest in this series Ray and Me. His sense of humor shines in the very popular My Weird School Series. He is the author of over 80 books for children.

Dan resides in southern New Jersey with his family.

   Deborah Heiligman

Deborah Heiligman

Deborah was born in Allentown, PA. She lived in the same house her whole childhood. Deborah was a good student, and loved school, although she was not the perfect child. She was inspired by the author E.L Konigsburg and by several of her teachers in high school. Deborah went on to Brown University where she majored in Religious Studies. After graduating she found herself working for Scholastic News Explorer where she discovered she loved writing for children. Years later Deborah left Scholastic to freelance and has written many non-fiction, picture books and fiction books for children of all ages. Her latest book Charles and Emma has received starred reviews from Publisher's Weekly, School Library Journal, Horn Book and more.

Deborah resides in New York.

Alan Katz

As a print and television writer, Alan has majored in silliness for more than 25 years. During that time, he has written for a whole bunch of Emmy-nominated TV shows , animated series like Taz-Mania, Disney’s Raw Toonage and Goof Troop, network specials, game shows, articles for publications including the New York Times and the New York Daily News, and created hundreds of comic books, trading cards and other special projects for kids and their parents.

His latest titles are Going, Going, Gone! and Karate Pig along with many other titles.

He resides in Connecticut with his family.

           Leslie Kimmelman

Leslie Kimmelman

The very first word Leslie learned to read was A-L-L. It was particularly appropriate because from the joyful moment she got her first library card, her goal was to read every single book in the children’s section.

When Leslie was in college in a small New England town, a young woman came to speak as part of an alumni career day.She talked about her career as an editor at a publishing house where, she said, she got to read books all day long. After graduation, Leslie moved to New York City and began her publishing career. She spent many happy years as a children's book editor at various publishing houses.

Leslie is the author of many picture books including Everybody Bonjours and How Much Do I Love You?

She resides just outside of New York City with her husband.

     Daniel Kirk

Daniel Kirk

Daniel Kirk is the author and illustrator of over thirty books for children, including Elf Realm, Snow Dude, Dogs Rule!, Cat Power, Library Mouse, and his latest, picture book, Library Mouse, A Friend's Tale.

Both his writing and illustrating emphasize imagination, whimsy and play, though he always like to try something new. On the illustration side, he enjoys experimenting with different media, and his work varies from the modeled, semi-realistic, to the flat and patterned. Publishers tend to think of him as the guy who paints cars and trucks really well, a specialist in books for boys, but he has been trying his hand at painting and writing cuddly animal stories and books with girl protagonists, too.

Daniel resides in New Jersey with his family.

          Michelle Knudsen

Michelle Knudsen

Michelle Knudsen is the author of 40 books for children. Her best-known title is Library Lion (Candlewick Press), which was a New York Times bestseller and has been translated into several languages. Her latest book is a middle-grade fantasy novel called The Dragon of Trelian.

Formerly a full-time children’s book editor, Michelle continues to edit manuscripts on a freelance basis and has also worked as a bookseller, substitute teacher, library supervisor, and managing editor, among other things.

She resides in Brooklyn, NY, with her diabetic cat, Cleo.

           E B Lewis

E.B Lewis

Earl Bradley Lewis was born on December 16, 1956, in Philadelphia, PA. As early as the third grade he displayed artistic promise. Inspired by two uncles, who were artists, Lewis decided he wanted to follow in their footsteps.
After finishing the sixth grade, he attended the Saturday morning Temple University School Art League run by his uncle. Under the tutelage of Clarence Wood, a noted painter in Philadelphia, Lewis began his formal art training. He remained in the program until his enrollment in the Temple University Tyler School of Art in 1975. Upon graduation in 1979, Lewis went directly into teaching, along with freelancing in Graphic Design. He later went on to illustrate children's book and has earned a Caldecott Honor and a Coretta Scott King Honor awards.

His latest book Bibbity Bobbity Barbershop was released earlier this year.

        Greg Logsted

Greg Logsted

Greg was born in Amityville, NY, (the horror) and grew up in Ridgefield, CT.  Looking back he says it was a good town to grow up in but hated it at the time. He wanted to get out, break free, see the world. He briefly attended The University Of Arizona, majored in journalism, but he was too hyper to sit still and study. Greg drove into the desert and never went back. Together with his wife Lauren Baratz-Logsted and his daughter, Jackie they have written a book series called The Sisters 8. Greg also writes independently and his latest title is Alibi Junior High.


Greg resides with his family in Danbury, CT.

Pooja Makhijani

Pooja Makhijani was born in Queens, New York and grew up in Edison, New Jersey. She began her writing career in her very pink bedroom where she wrote a variety of stories. She attended Johns Hopkins University, where she received her degree in biomedical engineering ("Don't ask," she says). Pooja fell in love with Baltimore, The City That Reads and decided to go into publishing and writing after her graduation.

Pooja graduated with her Masters in Fine Arts from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. She is the editor of Under Her Skin: How Girls Experience Race in America, an anthology of essays by women that explores the complex ways in which race shapes American lives and families and Mama's Saris, a picture book about girl's fascination with dressing up.

   Ann Malaspina

Ann Malaspina

Ann has written many nonfiction books for young people, some of them about people fighting for their civil rights. After reading about many people, such as US Congressman John Lewis of Georgia, who were not allowed inside their local libraries during the Jim Crow era, she decided to write Finding Lincoln, her first book of fiction. Ann has also authored many non-fiction works including the biographies Harriet Tubman and Chopin's Work.

Ann resides in Ridgefield, NJ.

       Trish Marx

Trish Marx

Trish Marx is the author of more than one dozen non-fiction books for children ranging from history, Echoes of World War II and biography, Touching the Sky: The Flying Adventures of Wilbur and Orville Wright; to environmental issues, Everglades Forever. As a child, Marx enjoyed reading non-fiction books, especially the poetry of Carl Sandburg. Marx earned a Masters degree in Journalism and was inspired to write non-fiction after a move to England connected her with World War II survivors, who she says had "wonderful stories to tell." When Marx combined her reporting interests with the World War II history she felt was important to share, non-fiction writing came naturally.

       Wendy Mass

Wendy Mass

Wendy Mass is the author of six novels for young people, including A Mango-Shaped Space (which was awarded the Schneider Family Book Award by the American Library Association), Leap Day, the Twice Upon a Time fairy tale series, and Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life, which earned a starred review in Publishers Weekly magazine. Her latest book is titled Every Soul a Star.

She tells people her hobbies are hiking and photography, but really they're collecting candy bar wrappers and searching for buried treasure with her metal detector.

        Jennifer Morgan

Jennifer Morgan

Jennifer's work as a storyteller, author, educator and environmental advocate flows out of her love of the natural world and cosmology. As former director of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Jersey, she started local and national programs for farmers and consumers. In 1996, she took the Earth Literacy program in cosmology and evolution at Genesis Farm, Blairstown, NJ. It so inspired her that she went on to take classes in cosmology and evolution at Princeton University. "Science is handing us an origin story," she says, "and we've only barely begun to understand its mythic dimensions." She believes that cosmology stories profoundly shape our relationships, work, play, culture, and institutions. Her books are Born With a Bang, From Lava to Life and Mammals Who Morph.

      Roxie Munro

Roxie Munro

Roxie is the acclaimed author/illustrator of more than 30 books for children including Mazescapes; Amazement Park; The Inside-Outside Books of New York City [New York Times Best Illustrated Award], Washington DC, Texas, London, Paris, and Libraries. Roxie has been an artist from the age of six, when she won first prize in a county-wide contest for a painting of a bowl of fruit. She has supported herself all her life on her art, at one point freelancing in Washington DC as a television courtroom artist. Fourteen of her paintings have been published as covers of The New Yorker magazine. Her lastest book is Inside-Outside Dinosaurs. (September 2009).

          Elise Primavera

Elise Primavera

Elise Primavera has been writing and illustrating books for children for over twenty-five years. Her illustrations for Raising Dragons (Silver Whistle, 1998) by Jerdine Nolen. received a 1999 Christopher Award, the 1999 Irma S. and James H. Black Award for Excellence in Children’s Literature from the Bank Street College of Education, and an Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award. Newsweek, Sesame Street Parent’s magazine, and Smithsonian Magazine selected the book as one of the best of 1998.

In 1999 she created her national best-selling book Auntie Claus which has since sold close to half a million copies. In 2004 she was asked to illustrate the Christmas Brochure for the White House. In 2006 Elise wrote and illustrated her first novel, The Secret Order of the Gumm Street Girls. Her latest book Louise the Big Cheese comes out in September, 2009.

Elise Primavera lives in Red Bank, New Jersey.

          Edel Rodriguez

Edel Rodriguez

Edel Rodriguez was born in 1971 in Havana, Cuba. He received a B.F.A. in Painting from Pratt Institute in 1994 and an M.F.A. from Hunter College in 1998. Using a variety of materials, his work ranges from conceptual to portraiture and landscape. A stamp he created for the United States Postal Service was released in the Summer of 2005. His new kids’ book Sergio Saves the Game! is a follow up to last year’s Sergio Makes a Splash!.

            Patricia Saxton

Patricia Saxton

Somewhere around the age of three, Patricia Saxton picked up a pencil and never quite put it down. Today her award-winning works in oil, pencil, and pen and ink hang in corporate and private collections across the U.S.  Saxton’s talents also form the core of Saxton Illustration and Design, a graphic design, illustration and writing firm established in 1985. Saxton has also combined her skills to author/illustrate the popular children’s book, The Book of Mermaids, and due on bookshelves in 2009, A Book of Fairies.

Judythe Sieck

Rebecca Stead

Rebecca was born and raised in New York City, where you might have seen her trying to cross Broadway and read a book at the same time. She now yells at her eight-year-old for doing the same thing. Until several years ago, Rebecca worked as a public defender. Turning her life toward writing has been both a delight and a challenge. Her first children's book was First Light and new book is When You Reach Me (July 2009). They both are published by Wendy Lamb Books.

          Nancy Tafuri

Nancy Tafuri

Nancy Tafuri is probably best known as the creator of  Have You Seen My Duckling?, a 1985 Caldecott Honor Book described by Parent’s Choice as “beautifully precise yet emotionally affecting.”but she has auhored more than 45 books.

Trained as a graphic designer, Tafuri has authored more than 45 books for the very young over 27 years.

Tafuri was born in Brooklyn, New York. For the first ten years of her life she was an only child and says that this helped her to learn to entertain herself  with  stories  and  art. Tafuri entered the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1964. Her first job was as an assistant art director for the publishing firm Simon & Schuster.

When Tafuri finally found herself illustrating children’s books, either her own or other authors’, she felt she had found her life’s calling and a strong sense of joy from creating them. Her latest book is titled The Big Storm A Very Soggy Counting Book.

Matthew Trueman grew up in Friuli Venezia Giulia, 45 minutes north of Venice in northern Italy.
He returned to the States to attend the Ringling School of Art and Design, and graduated with a B.F.A in illustration. He has illustrated many notable books and his most current titles are One Beetle Too Many: The Adventures of Charles Darwin and Tony and the Pizza Champion.
He has done illustrating work for Random House, Houghton Mifflin Publishers, Dutton Children's Books,Chronicle Children Books and has an upcoming children's book for Farrar Straus & Giroux, as well as corporate and editorial work.
His passion for food, eating it and never cooking it, makes of him the best gourmand around.
He also likes the outdoors, whether jogging or baling hay in his friends' farm.

Matthew resides in northern New Jersey.

          Jean Van Leeuwen

Jean Van Leeuwen

When Jean was growing up in the small town of Rutherford, New Jersey, she was always called a tomboy. That was because she loved riding bikes, climbing trees, and playing baseball with the boys in the neighborhood. When she finally came inside, she had another name: bookworm. Later on, after studying journalism at Syracuse University, she moved to New York City and got a job in the children's book department of a publisher. Jean then became inspired to begin her own writing career.

Jean has authored over 50 books, many inspired by her own children. Jean has written everything from picture books to non fiction, including the popular Oliver and Amanda series. Her latest book is Chicken Soup which is illustrated by her son, David Gavril.

Jean resides in New York state with her husband.

           Nancy Viau

Nancy Viau

Nancy Viau has worked as an elementary school teacher, a counselor in an after-school program, an instructor for reluctant readers, and a freelance writer. She now specializes in writing for children, and along with her debut middle-grade novel, Samantha Hansen Has Rocks in Her Head , her stories, poems, and activities appear in: Highlights for Children, Highlights High Five, Babybug, Ladybug, and many other magazines for children and adults.

Nancy resides in southern New Jersey.

        Mutiya & David

David & Mutiya Vision

They come from opposite extremes of the universe, yet husband/wife team David and Mutiya Vision have found the connective thread that bridges the gap in between. They draw from that space to create works that inspire, enrich, enlighten and empower children, families, and communities reaching the world at large. They are the authors of ten published children's books. Their latest book is The Land of Expression (June 2009).

The couple resides in New York.

          Kay Winters

Kay Winters

Stories have always been magic to Kay. Her parents read to her every night. Kay was an only child who moved 11 times and was in three first grades. Books were her constant companions. She spent her early years in schools in the Middle Atlantic States, went to high school in Swarthmore, PA , and then received a BS in Education at Arcadia University. This was later followed by a MS in Education from Wheelock College, and further graduate work at Lehigh University. Kay has a love of history and has authored many books on the subject. Her latest book Colonial Voices Hear Them Speak has won the 2009 Carol Otis Hurst Children's Book Award.

Kay lives with her husband in Bucks County, PA.

         Ferida Wolff

Ferida Wolff

Ferida grew up in Brooklyn, NY surrounded by many members of her family. She fondly remembers playing ball with her friends, especially in the summers. When she was 10 years old her family moved to Queens, which put her in close proximity to several libraries.

While Ferida loved to write, she never imagined she would one day be an author. Along the way she did many different things, from teaching to working for a magazine. Her first book was published in 1989 and it is still in print. Ferida has authored 16 books. Her lastest title The Story Blanket won the Parent's Choice Silver Award Book.

Ferida lives in southern New Jersey.

          Harriet Ziefert

Harriet Ziefert

Harriet Ziefert is the prolific author, illustrator and packager of scores of easy-to-read picture books for very young readers. Ziefert grew up in North Bergen, New Jersey, studied at Smith College, and earned a master's degree in education from New York University. Subsequently, she worked for many years in elementary schools, teaching at grade levels ranging from kindergarten to the fifth grade. After her own children were born Harriet entered the publishing field and then decided to write her own books. Some of her published credits include What's A Birthday?, Snow Party, Posey Paints a Princess, and ABC Dentist.

Harriet lives in northern New Jersey.
