      Princeton Welcomes: Chang-rae Lee
    The award-winning author of our first Princeton Reads selection will appear at Princeton High School on Oct. 23. Chang-rae Lee is Professor in the Council of the Humanities and Creative Writing at Princeton University. In addition to Native Speaker, he has also written A Gesture Life, the story of an aging Korean-American who suffers from his memories of the horrific treatment of Korean "comfort women" in World War II. Lee's numerous awards include the Anisfield-Wolf Prize, the Asian American Literary Award for Fiction, a PEN/Hemingway Award, an American Book Award, a Barnes & Noble Discover Award, the QPB New Voices Award, an Oregon Book Award and a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship.

Free tickets (limit 2 per person) for this event will be available beginning Sept. 23 at the library's Information Desk or by calling (609) 924-9529, ext. 220. Preference for tickets will be given to Princeton Public Library cardholders. Those without cards will be placed on a waiting list and notified by phone if space is available.


Princeton Cheers:
Community Day at the Stadium
    The community is invited to experience everything from a foot race to face painting to a football game at Princeton University's annual Community Day/Staff Day on Saturday, Oct. 12, when Princeton plays Colgate. The pre-game party for the town and University communities will take place in and around Princeton Stadium and feature two hours of activities for all ages and interests, including a Community Information Fair. Doors open at 11 a.m. for track meet registration; festivities begin at 11:30.
    Copies of Native Speaker will be awarded to the first 100 people (one per family) who attend. Chang-rae Lee will be present at the library's exhibit to autograph books from 11:45 to 12:45. All the pre-game festivities are included in the price of the football ticket admission, which is $6.

Princeton Writes: A Call for Essays
    Community members are invited to submit a 500-word essay in response to their reading of Native Speaker. The essays should reflect the writers' personal reactions either to the book as a whole or to specific elements such as characters, incidents, imagery, language and structure. Submitted essays will be published on the library's Web pages and selected ones will be published in The Princeton Packet, Town Topics or U.S. 1. Everyone who submits an essay will receive a chance to win gift certificates donated by Barnes & Noble and Micawber Books.



    The deadline for entries is October 25. One essay per person will be accepted. All essays should be typed, double-spaced and include the writer's name and phone number. To be published on the library's Web pages, the essay should contain a statement giving the library permission to publish the essay and the writer's name. Submit essays in person at the library's Information Desk; by mail to Susan Roth, Princeton Public Library, Princeton Shopping Center, 301 N. Harrison St., Princeton, NJ 08540; or by email to books@princetonlibrary.org.

Princeton Celebrates: An Afternoon of Korean Culture
    Join us at the Arts Council of Princeton for an afternoon celebrating the culture of Korea and Korean Americans in honor of Native Speaker. Music, dancing, art and food will be the focus of this family-oriented activity.
    We will also select the raffle winners of Barnes & Noble and Micawber Books gift certificates from the writers of essays on Native Speaker.

Princeton Discusses: Native Speaker

Participate in our community-wide book discussion of Native Speaker by joining one of the groups scheduled throughout town during Princeton Reads.
