What's Green and Read All Over?

Saturday April 18, 2009
10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Well the book drive is over and is was a blast! We collected about 2600 books!! Thanks to everyone for making donations.

Thanks to the students from Engineers Without Borders and Chris Johnson from Better World Books as well to our incredbile staff of teen (and pre-teen) volunteers, including members from our library's Teen Advisory Board and Go-Between Club, students from the GREEN Community Problem Solving (CmPS) team at West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South, and the South Brunswick High School Planeteers!
Our volunteers helped to scan titles of books, sort and pack donated books. Thanks too to our "heavy lifters" who moved the packed boxes! The CmPS team brought a "make a piggy-bank" recycled craft project for young children and had many takers thought the day on the plaza.
We are also grateful to Cintas Document Management of Lawrenceville, NJ for bringing their "shredder" truck and accepting bags and boxes of personal documents from indivduals. These documents were shredded on-site (you could watch it happen on a video screen) and the paper will be recycled.
A thank-you too to author Megan McCafferty, who came to the event and donated signed copies of her novels (Sloppy Firsts to Perfect Fifths) to help support The Ghana Project.
We also appreciate our performers for adding to the wonderful tone of the day, starting out with Sympoh, a student breakdance group from Princeton University, followed by The Tune Bugs with songs for little listeners (and dancers!) featuring "the singing librarian" Kristin Friberg, and the awesome Cosmic Pelican, a jazz trio (and graduating seniors) from Princeton High School, and a chamber quintet from Princeton University.
Last but not least, thanks to Janie Hermann, Cynthia Lampert, Martha Perry and the rest of the Princeton Public Library staff, and our event partners, Chris Johnson and the rest of the staff at Better World Books, and Mohit, Daniel, Lizette, Jane and Jahnabi from the Princeton University chapter of Engineers Without Borders.

MORE BACKGROUND INFO ABOUT THE EVENT:

The Princeton Public Library and Better World Books teamed up to host the book drive and started planning it in the fall of 2008. Better World Books has partnered on community book drives in the past with the Brooklyn Public and Chicago Public libraries.
We asked for new and/or gently used books to support both the Princeton Public Library and to benefit the Ghana Project, coordinated by the Princeton University chapter of Engineers Without Borders, who are building an environmentally and ecologically sustainable library in Ghana to promote English language skills and education.
Library staff and volunteers from Engineers Without Borders, the library’s Teen Advisory Board, Go Between Club and other youth volunteers collected new and gently used books in good condition in the library’s Community Room and on the outdoor plaza. Volunteers helped to scan titles of books, sort and pack donated books.
The Princeton Public Library will continue to accept books for donation to The Ghana Project through May 1, 2009, in the library's lobby. They are seeking new and/or gently used children's books.
In keeping with the Better World Books book drive recycling theme to support “literacy, not landfill”, student environmental clubs from area high schools were invited to host education tables at our event, and Cintas Document Management was on site with a truck to accept and shred used documents(up to three office-sized boxes of personal documents) from 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. only. These documents were shredded on-site (you could watch them on a video screen) and the paper will be recycled.
Including live music and a dance performance into the event added a lot of fun and we were happy to be able to include local talent! We started just before noon and continued throughout the day, featuring The Princeton University breakdance group Sympoh; The Tune Bugs, who combine elements of swing, bluegrass, jazz and rock to make music for the littlest of fans, Cosmic Pelican, a Princeton High School jazz trio; And a chamber group from Princeton University.
